Climate change and global warming are constantly in the news, and everyone is being asked to reduce their carbon footprint. Here are some easy ways to be more green.
Recycle
Most households have access to recycling facilities, often through their local council. It doesn't take much effort to put plastics, cans, glass, cardboard and aerosols aside to put in a recycling bin.
Recycle a bit More
Batteries take a bit more effort to recycle as you usually have to take them to your local recycling centre, but it's better than them ending up in a landfill site. Better still, buy rechargeable batteries when you can.
Walk
Instead of jumping in the car for every journey walk the shorter ones. Not only will this save you money on fuel exercise is good for you!
Shopping Bags
Most supermarkets sell "bags for life" but any canvas bag should be robust enough to serve as a shopping bag. Just remember to take it with you when you go to the shops.
Switch It Off
Don't leave all your electrical appliances on stand-by as this still uses power. Switching them off doesn't take any great effort, it just means you have to get off the sofa to switch them on again.
Unplug It
Chargers for phones and laptops and anything else still use power when they are plugged in even when they are not charging so remember to unplug them when you're not using them.
Lights
Changing your tungsten light bulbs to compact fluorescent tubes (energy savers) is a good start, but remember to switch off lights in rooms that are not occupied.
Heating
Why not put on a jumper before you turn the heating up? This will help you save money too.
Driving
Fuel prices may be high but for many the car has become a necessity rather than a luxury. Driving conservatively, maintaining a steady speed and avoiding sudden acceleration can help save fuel (and money!) and also reduces your emissions.
More Shopping
A lot of fresh food in the supermarkets has its county or country of origin on the packet. Buying local produce can help you to reduce your carbon footprint. Save exotic foods for special treats. Also, try to buy products with less packaging. Prevention is better than cure.
