A Car-free World?

A new proposition on a more fuel efficient Green America.

In a world dominated by automobiles, we should ask ourselves: Do we really need these? A lot of today's controversy revolves around the automobile. Ridiculous gas prices, air pollution, and God forbid, global warming. Do not worry, though, for where there is a problem, a solution often follows.

This is probably one of the more insane propositions, but I think we should outlaw the automobile. That's right, live in a world without cars. Well sort of. It is definitely out of the question to rid ourselves of the automobile completely, it is the source of too many jobs and tax dollars, but we could definitely cut down on its use considerably. The use of automobiles within towns, villages, and small cities could be wiped out. Unless you have to travel a considerable distance to get to your job, there is no need to even use an automobile. In larger cities, increase the amount of public transit programs, such as buses, but cut down on smaller vehicles like taxis. If the buses were improved to run on bio diesel fuel, then even they are a smaller problem. With increased amounts of public transit, individual cars wouldn't be needed anymore. We could also outlaw racing activities such as Nascar, local races, drag racing, etc. That alone would cut American fuel usage quite a bit.

Then you have the fitness benefits of the Reduced Automobile Proposition. Without cars, more people will need to either walk, jog, run, ride a bicycle, etc. to their job. This will cause increased fitness in people, especially if they have to go very far to get to their work place. In America today, we can't deny that fitness can be a problem, especially in a lot of our children.

As a last thought, we need to throw in the unpredictable weather. Nobody wants to have to walk a mile or two in the rain, so how are we going to solve this? Easy, have a notice on the news of all television channels, radio stations, and a notification sent over the internet as an automatic popup on your computer to notify you if you are allowed to use automobiles for that day. If there is any sort of extreme weather, then vehicles would be allowed, but on any day that there is no bad weather, plan on walking. As for the abovementioned people that have a considerable distance to travel to work, they could be granted special permits to use automobiles. So, as crazy as it sounds, we could cut down on automobile use quite a bit.

From my article "10 Ways to Save Gasoline"

I do not believe we can cut fuel use more than maybe fifteen percent, I consider anyone who believes we can do much above twenty five percent to be nut cases who should be locked up to protect themselves and others.

You are one of the ones I am talking about.
