San Francisco was the first to ban Styrofoam, followed by Oakland, Portland, Santa Monica, and Santa Cruz; New York is talking about banning Styrofoam, Denver should be thinking about it. A lot of research is going into biodegradable or recyclable to-go ware. I worked at a place that had forks and spoons made out of corn sugar, don't put these into anything hot or they melt! A little more research might have to go into some of these containers but the bottom line is: Styrofoam is bad and not needed.
It's too bad kicking oil isn't as easy as kicking Styrofoam! Sadly, in both instances, we the people, are waiting for our savior, waiting for someone to show us the way, because that is our right as American's, you give us what is right, and please, make it easy and fast! Well kids, we should be one step ahead, we should not need boxes, Styrofoam or Bioplastic; we do not need a paper cup because, we have our own! Instead of waiting for companies to provide eco-friendly take-out or condemning them for not, seek permanence, seek a reusable cup. I always have my cup but one thing I have not done, but will do: bring Tupperware with me into a restaurant. I know I cannot eat a whole meal and I admit, I do have a little social anxiety about doing this, but I will bring my own Tupperware because change starts within, change starts with one.
This is not for everyone; it's hard to plan, unless you are a fashionable girl with an oversized purse, where are you going to put all these cups and Tupperware? So maybe we do need to put pressure on businesses and cities to ban Styrofoam, but we also need to make an effort.
