Darfur Letter to President Bush

This is a short letter I wrote for president bush about the current conditions in Darfur.

Dear president Bush,

What do you think about genocide (the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group)? Do you think that we should turn our backs to it while it goes on around the world? Would you rather be ignorant to it, until it affects us directly? Or do you think that we should get involved, and get rid of it all once and for all? The Darfur genocide is a great example of this. Did you know that thousands die there each month due to things that we in America, as Americans, don't have to put up with? Lack of water, food, and shelter killed hundreds of thousands so far. Thousands of women have been raped, and died of STD's because of that, since this began. The great amount of people dieing is adding up to more and more each day.

I say that we should help these people out, if not for political, nor social reasons, but for humanitarian reasons, for the good in our hearts. Everyone in Darfur has an equal right to live a good, long, happy life. Most of them, though, are being denied that due to either horrible conditions or by the government's systematic destruction of people who have the same ethnicity as rebel groups. I feel that we should send forces over there to help them get back their old villages. There they had plenty of water and food, and everyone had a home to go to. Jan Egeland says that Darfur could possibly reach excesses of 100,000 people dieing each month. I say that this would be unacceptable. Their deaths are for nothing, they never did anything for this to be done to them.

Some say that these people should be killed because they are the ethnicity as some rebel groups. I say that this is preposterous; you don't choose what ethnicity you are, it is handed to you the day you are born. The actions of some people from a group don't speak about the entire group, but from the individuals who did those actions. Others may go on to say that those people may go on to follow in others paths. Continuing the rebellion, that started the whole rebellion in the first place. If they wanted to help the rebellion they would of by now. Not everyone in a racial ethnicity thinks the same, nor are they all neither inferior nor superior.

The many people dieing in Darfur is appalling, humanitarian aid is needed. These people need food, water, shelter, and medical aide. Though bringing these things to these people isn't that hard. Send over large bundles of bottled water and canned food, tents to provide shelter from the elements, and kits with medical supplies. That would be cheap, compared to the alternative, and they can all be easily dropped over refugee camps by planes. A small military force to protect them wouldn't harm anyone either. The fact that these people are being mass murdered due to their ethnicity is appalling. They should be treated with respect, no matter their ethnicity. They all work hard to live as normal a life as they can get, yet the fact they don't get respect for that is unspeakable.

So, Mr. Bush, I feel that we should fix this problem now, before the death rates grow too high. These people , these families are put under persecution for something they have no control over. We should go in now and help them, from the good in our hearts. It's the best way, the safest way, the only way to give these people they life they deserve. The help they need, we have and we should give it to them!

Sincerely

Christopher W. Beirne
