Twenty years ago when I was pregnant I was told that after having a life of continuous kidney problems including having one removed at the age of 7 that I should terminate my pregnancy, As you may imagine this was a terrible shock and when I asked why I was told that while I was pregnant that I would lose my remaining kidney and possible my baby.
I was 11 weeks pregnant at the time and was given one week to make my mind up as to wether I was going to terminate my baby or take a chance and spend my pregnancy in hospital, Well I went ahead with it and seven months later I gave birth to a beautiful daughter, Yes I lost my kidney and went on to dialysis 1 year later.
It was 3 years later that things got harder when my husband left as he found it very hard to cope with me being on a machine for 5 hours a day 3 days a week and things didn't always run smooth.
After 16 years of dialysis and bringing up my daughter for 10 years of that on my own my new partner gave me a kidney. Why did I have to wait so long not knowing if I was ever going to see my daughter grow up, turn 18 or have a 21st birthday or even get married? Because there has been and still is not enough donors.
Thanks to him I saw my daughter turn 18 and will see her turn 21 and best of all I will be the proud mother of the bride one day. I am not sick anymore no pain no tiredness no more restrictions I am free for the first time in sixteen years.
So I ask you do you or don't you donate and if this story changes your views please act on it.
