The issue of global warming has escalated to the highest alarming stage. Weather abnormalities are being experience by everybody all throughout the world. Now is the time that we have to act as one to salvage our world. Let the government and proper agencies do their part. And as individual citizen of this universe, let's do our best to help ease the problem. Let's not do it for a day or for the celebration of Earth's Day but do it for a lifetime. Make it a daily habit.
Here's a list of things what one person can do:
- Segregate biodegradable waste from non-biodegradable waste. You can actually earn money from plastics, bottles, metals, papers, and many others.
- Label your rubbish bin which is for bio-degradable and which is non-biodegradable so that it will be easier for garbage collectors to sort out your garbage.
- Every place in the world should implement the law that “no segregation, no collection” so that people will learn how to segregate.
- Never ever burn your trashes. Burning greatly affects the thinning of the ozone layer.
- Save papers for recycling and earn money from it. There are companies who buy papers. One ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees.
- Plant trees, shrubbery, and flowering plants. They prevent soil erosion, provide cooling summer, windbreaks, and beautify the land.
- Use litter bags. If you don't have one in your car, save the next strong plastic bag you get when you purchase something from a store.
- Donate magazines and paper bags to hospitals and nursing homes. (Take them to the beauty parlor. Others like to read while they're waiting.)
- Build birdhouses and bat houses. Birds and bats will gladly dine on the insects in your garden. (No, bats won't hurt you!)
- Use a kitchen towel to dry your hands instead of always reaching for a paper towel. Say “No bag, thanks” when you buy only one item at the store.
- Line dresser drawers with newspapers. (Not only recycles paper but you remember how long it's been since you changed the lining.)
- When you see bugs on your plants, pick them off by hand instead of reaching for a chemical insecticide. If there are too many, try filling squirts bottle with soapy water and spraying them.
- Put houseplants in every room. They refresh the air and raise the level of humidity.
- Instead of a room deodorant spray, try this. Boil a teaspoon of whole cloves and a stick of cinnamon in a pint of water for 10 minutes.
- Take an inventory of electrical gadgets in your home. Do you really need an electric toothbrush, electric can opener, or an electric pencil sharpener?

- Leave the car in the garage for short trips and take a walk instead. You'll get the benefits of fresh air, sunshine and exercise.
- For the times when you do take the car, try to plan several errands to accomplish in one trip. You save time and gas consumption as well.
- Use a “4-55” air conditioning in your car (4 windows down and 55mph).
- Pass up colored tissue and paper towels. Even though the paper is biodegradable, the dyes are pollutants.
- Plant sweet basil near front and back doors to discourage flies. And in the garden, plant sage, marigolds, and mint to make insects feel unwelcome. (They don't like the smell)
- Take outgrown clothing to thrift shops, church collection boxes, etc.
- Reuse plastic tubs. They make great bathtub toys for kids, spill proof carriers for lunch boxes, and if they have see-through tops, good containers for buttons, nails, screw, and rubber bands.
- Compact your garbage. Then flatten cans and boxes. Put smaller ones inside larger ones. Each person produces 3 1/2 pounds of garbage per day.
- Pick up litter- not just your own- wherever you find it. Do your part to keep the world beautiful.
- Take five minutes showers to conserve water.
- Buy eggs and milk in cardboard containers instead of plastic.
- Whenever possible, use cold water for washing hands.
- Report to proper authorities all vehicles that are smoke- belchers.
Global warming is everybody's concern. Let's us do our share to keep our world a beautiful place to live in. Let's preserve it for ourselves and our posterity.
