Help the Environment with Water Conservation

We are looking to do our part when it comes to water conservation. Here are three ideas that I came across that you might want to consider.

Being a person that loves the outdoors with camping, fishing, hiking and so on, I find it only fair to do my part to make sure that those that come after me, like my children, grand children and other future generations get to enjoy the environment here in America as I have, if they so wish.

I was watching an interesting program the other night on the History Channel about water conservation. It got me thinking, what I can do to help conserve water which it turn also helps the environment, so I did some research and here are a few items that I came up with.

Apparently one of the biggest culprits when it comes to using too much water is the water we flush down our toilets. According to one article that I found, 26% of water consumption in the USA comes via this means. So how can we slow this down? One solution I found is a company that makes these blue square fungus eaters. You put one of these babies in your toilet and eats away any and all waste products in it. According to the manufacturer, using one of these per day allows you to only flush one time per day. I'll leave it up to you as to whether or not that sounds like something feasible.

Another solution I found also had to do with fungus. A company in western Pennsylvania makes a product called “Pooh Powder”, and no I am not kidding about the name. Here is how it works. You are given a bag that fits nicely over your toilet seat. Inside the bag is a fungus (discovered in South America) whose sole purpose in life is to eat human waste. Go figure! In any event your business done in the bag, you seal the bag up with another bag they give you and then you toss the bag in the trash. Both bags are also biodegradable and by the time your trash men come around to collect your trash the “pooh powder” has done its job and the waste and odor is gone. This eliminates you from having to flush and at the same time you lessen the burden on your municipal sewage company. Again this is another thing if you can stand doing then it helps, you'll have to weigh the pros and cons. Currently this particular company supplies mostly the military and outdoor enthusiasts.

Last but not least, is a new wave of toilet available in some locations here in the USA, but most notable for being in the UK and Europe. It has dual flushing capabilities with two flushing handles, marked appropriately, 1 and you guessed it 2. With the associations to each number being obvious. Handle 1 uses less water than handle 2 which aides in conserving water. This is probably more of a practical solution then the first two that I gave you, but a combination of all three I am sure would work nicely.

We constantly think in terms of reusable energy. How about reusable water? Or better yet, a means to cheaply convert sea water on enormous scales.

Good article-especially in this drought season.

Option three seems most plausible :-) I've used it in two homes I've lived in in Europe and in the Middle East. It works well. I haven't checked it out, but there must be a way to limit the amount of water that comes into the tank? I'm also interested in sea salination and I know many others are too, but I've never seen progress on whether or not that idea is legitimate. Maybe you can research it for us :-) Brian
