This is the day of hunger! CNN reported that more than half of the population of the world has income less than USD2 per day. Here we are, buying and stuffing goods and loading them into our house. Children throwing away excessive food while in some parts of the world, others can hardly make do every minute, hour and day.
It is disheartening to learn about the fact that the world's producers of rice and staple food are cutting down on export in order to feed their own people. It is reported the more affluent people are demanding more while others goes hungry.
I pray that there is a balance here. As the world goes borderless, the more advanced countries who supply technology, scientific research and information will exchange developing countries' goods and produce so that there is equalization.
I think as individual we should also conserve. Here's how:
- Food, energy and resources.
- Cultivate an awareness of hunger problems around the world and thus a sympathetic, compassionate attitude towards them.
- Campaign/raise funds to support third world countries.
- Sponsor a child.
- Fight poverty through education/industrialization/business and commerce
- Cultivate a giving mentality, if you have two, give away one.
- Go for a visit to the poorer places for example rural areas. I am sure we will be touched by the people and their needs.
- Government intervention through policies to eradicate poverty.
- Community living-“food-pool.” As the Chinese saying goes, < in order to fulfill the larger self, one has to forgo the less self>.
- Do not hoard resources. Store enough only for your family.
Hope we can do better to conquer hunger and poverty.
