Minimum Wage vs. Cost of Living

Why can’t the minimum wage be set to keep up with inflation?

Although minimum wage has increased this year to $6.55 an hour, it still does not compete with the continually rising of the cost of living. The neglect of increasing minimum wages from 1997 to 2007 had already left many families in the poverty level.

With the current prices of Consumer Goods and Gasoline, families working at minimum wage will never rise above poverty level.

So the main question on every hard workers mind: Why can't the minimum wage be set to keep up with Inflation? The answer is; because it is up to our Congressmen to decide on this, and as of to date they have not chosen to do so.

The basic family of four in Baltimore, Md would need an annual income of $34,732.28 and this is bills and necessities only

This should actually be the minimum annual income needed for families Nationally to survive.

The increase that will take effect in July 2009 will help some, but it still will not bring the minimum wage up to par with the cost of living.

Congress needs to step up to the plate and pull our workers, our families, the Americans, out of Poverty. We need our minimum wages to correspond with Inflation.

To request that our Government do what is right and fair for Americans:

I'm am glad to see someone write something on this. We have suffered long enough in the Good Old USA with our poverty levels.

I strongly agree that more needs to be done about the minimum wage, because by the time the current raise in the minimum wage is implemented (July 2009) inflation will have negated any gain that would have benefited those that needed it. It is my opinion that if minimum wage had been kept current with the rise in inflation all of these years there wouldn’t be any poverty. Also there wouldn’t be any welfare or problems with our social security system that we are experiencing today. Having a lower wage structure that is below the cost of living (inflation) has placed a heavy burden on our society as a whole.
