Rising Oceans: You Learned Why It Cant Happen in Fifth Grade

It just takes a small bit of thought and you figure out, Oceans aren't going to rise significantly.

We all saw in our 5th grade science books (or maybe before that) that if you freeze a glass of water the glass breaks.  That little bit of knowledge can prove that global warming leading to rising oceans is far exaggerated.  Give Up?

Here's a clue " If the ICE caps melt, oceans will rise."  Still don't know?

The ICE caps are frozen so when they melt the water will shrink down and not add significantly more ocean volume than the Ice displaced.  It's a little confusing so let's go back to 5th grade.  Since ice expands when it is frozen then it shrinks when it melts, obviously.  And we also know that the North Pole is just a floating peice of ice.  And for all who know what the Titanic was we know that most of ice's volume when it is in water is under the surface.  This also means that it is displacing water in its liquid state.  Let's put it all together.  The North pole is displacing tons of seawater right now, so if it melts it will just release that water into the ocean doing nothing to the ocean levels.  What about the part thats above water?  Glad you asked,  while that part will add some ocean volume it wont be significant .  That is because if just the part underwater melted, ocean volume would decrease becasue the water is taking up less space as water instead of ice, so much of the ice above water will just level the ocean back to original level, plus a little.

Now the more intellectual of the bunch will be thinking "What about Greenland and antarctica?  Those ice caps are above water."  Well I've got you covered there too.

Just kidding, we're still screwed, just not as much as if the north pole also melted.  Ha I made you think for a second that global warming wasn't true.
