More than forty years ago I wrote a poem that was perhaps inspired: Let the land/Devour the sea/Then let it perish/ Like a dream.
Perhaps it was more than a dream. Perhaps there was some truth in those simple lines written by a fifteen year old. The sea is indeed perishing. And, all the bare faced lies and distortions of icecaps melting and replenishing the sea are simply that, bare faced lies and perverse distortion of the truth. And, why, might I ask would people whose own existence depends on the continued existence of the seas, lie about the land's intrusion and death like grip? They will have to answer in whatever part of their non functioning conscience their own survival lives in for all I care. What I do want to tell people is that the sea is not swelling through major ice melts but is dying through encroachment of plankton and oxygen destroying sludge. I will not pretend to be a marine biologist, I am a poet.
What I know about the conditions of the sea is indeed simple, but frightening. The destruction of oxygen in the sea is creating a kind of chemical incubation that is making the waters hot. It is as if those chemicals were automatic non human extinguishable bunson burners and they are boiling the sea. The salt content in the sea is also choking off those properties in the sea that were conducive to permitting the animal life in the seas to live.
Years ago I belonged to Greenpeace and their mission was to save the whale. Actually many people thought it was just some hippie movement of no human value. On the contrary those huge leviathans were necessary to control the oxygen zapping growths that are making our seas toxic and eventually dead.
I propose a law. Any killer of whales for the next two hundred years if reported and caught will be sentenced to ten years labor in the polar icecaps. This should be law enforced by the high court of international and planetary jurisdiction for the survival of life on planet earth. In the United State, all fisheries caught canning or buying whale will be immediately shut and their products confiscated and burned.
Are there really any whales left living?
