Top 10 Tips for Reducing Your Car Fuel Consumption

Did you know there are ways you can actually cut down the amount of fuel you use in your car without making huge changes? Not only will it save you money it will help save the planet too.

  1. Accelerate away slowly and avoid harsh braking - both use more fuel, estimated to be about 30% less with smooth driving
  2. Avoid using your air conditioner as much as possible - it can increase your consumption by 10%
  3. Keep to the speed limit - apart from it being the law it is also cheaper
  4. Avoid using a roof-rack or box or if you are on holiday take the box off when you arrive
  5. Make sure your tires are at the correct pressure: remember to check them when the car is cold, that is before not during a journey
  6. Don't sit and idle your car. When you start up move off immediately, don't wait for the car to "heat up". If you are driving smoothly it will do so no problem.
  7. Take out any unnecessary things from your car: the heavier the load the more fuel you use
  8. It is really worth shopping around for the cheapest local petrol/gas. It could save you as much as £100 a year.
  9. Avoid taking short trips - walk instead or take public transport, it is better for you and better for the environment
  10. Plan your journey to avoid delays such as traffic jams and road-works and avoid getting lost!

What about banning old vans, trucs and SUVs ?
Buy the car you need, not the one you'd like. What's the point having a huge off-road truc for going to work in town ? Yeah, ok, you'll be able to drive on pedestrians whithout notticing anything and park on sideways. ;)
The 9th is good. Walk or take a bike, it is better not only for your environement, but also for your health.
I don't understand the point of the 8th: shopping around will use gaz...

good point Burt but you can do it on the internet. Personally I take public transport whenever I can and am investigating investing in a Smart car for those journeys I can't avoid as I live in a rural area.
Totally agree about the big off road vehicles - we are plagued by them here and I am willing to be there never see an off road trail in their life.
