I watched the movie “Prozac Nation” and OH my goodness, talk about heavy handed!!! Aha ha definitely NOT a “light hearted film for the whole family” - ha, ha ,ha.
It's about a young journalist student trying to find herself and struggling with life, love and happiness (now why is that oddly familiar).
I have always thought that what makes these movies so much- much scarier is that (as with this one) that they are based on a true story.
Now that I think about it, why should that make it any harder to swallow than fiction? One only has to look at our own lives and those around us to know that reality is anything BUT picture perfect or should I say “fiction perfect.”
The cover of the movie had the words “this has nothing do with you” and the phrase is used sparing in the dialogue. I guess that was the authors way of highlighting the any parallel with our own lives was not mere coincidence but rather inevitable.
I believe that's what made Ally Mcbeal such a hit series, not only could we, in our own way, identify with the inadequacies and the eccentricities that defined her, but we were her comrades in the battle to keep them under lock and key.
Today! I propose a toast! To the eclectic mix of issues (brilliance or shortcomings) that make us who we are, that defines each of us!! But above all I propose toast the ability to co-exist and accept one another. What greater miracle must there be than for each of us to see beyond the tattoos our neighbor carries.
On the other hand though…If you really think about it, the need to be accepted or understood by a group of “weirdos”, who in themselves have no idea of what is “normal”, seems more foolish than playing hockey ah a ahha (ok damn it- I hate the sport - sue me!) ah ah … maybe they should have taught us this as children, maybe then more therapists would be unemployed and maybe... just maybe... Prozac would be a cure for the common cold.
