Don't Let Your Joy be Stolen

Supervisor vs subordinate conflict and finding your comfort zone as a subordinate.

Employees have all had them in one form or another, “the Boss from Hell”. Their authority and position intoxicate them. They assume the position of superiority because they have the power to dictate and make demands on their subordinates, beyond what is required for the position. They may use psychology, by saying, “only those employees who do more than what is expected will get an increase in salary”. Many employees have taken this position, “I am a person who does anything that is asked in regard to work assignments. I do not like doing overtime. I have done overtime in past years and I have found that those few hours of work are really taken back in taxes.”

If an employee is perceptive, he will soon realize when a supervisor is power hungry. Those supervisors, who have no scruples, will lie, cheat, and steal, if it serves their purpose. Many administrators have no problem with this, after all their reasoning is, “it is for the good of the department or company”. These power hungry managers do not consider the demands it makes on subordinates. When an idea is stolen by the supervisor, he or she may feel threatened and insecure, that a subordinate came up with an idea, that could improve performance, or even generate more revenue for the company. If you become part of the office clique group, that is favored by the boss, the boss hears no evil, sees no evil, and speaks no evil of members of the favored clique group. They butter up to the boss and listen attentively to report back to the boss on whatever they feel will secure that favoritism.

Don't let your joy be stolen. You must find away to survive under less desirable bosses until you move on or until that supervisor moves on. Think about your options while still in that position, while still trying to keep a good relationship with your supervisor. Keep looking for your niche, comfort zone, and a better job. Who knows, you just may end up being a boss yourself one day, having learned from your experiences to be a much better boss to your employees.
