Five Steps That Will Help You Calm Down

This will help you breathe after an issue upsets you. Just try it. I guarantee it will help.

  1. Walk away

Walking away will do two things for you. It will get you away from the problem and give you some space to collect your thoughts which will give you more time to get control of yourself.
  2. Breathe

This may sound stupid, but when you get upset you often have trouble remembering to breathe. Also this means you should take 5 to 10 deep breaths. When taking these breathes you should exhale slowly.
  3. Think happy thoughts

This is one of the most effective tools to calm down, because it gets your mind off of the problem and on something happy, or something that you like.
  4. If at all possible release your stress

Some people say punching a pillow or yelling loudly will release the stress you've built up from the problem. This is also a very good technique to calm down.
  5. Think of solutions to the problem

After you've calmed down you can start thinking of productive and safe solutions to the problem. Always think of more than one so that you have different choices of good solutions.

If you follow these steps when you are upset you should see yourself able to calm down within 30 minutes. Remember that when you are trying to calm down you should never do anything that could be potentially harmful to you or other people. Also try to stay away from other people when you start trying to calm down because people are often very irritable when they are first angered by a problem.
