Just mentioning the word “timeshare” can send shivers down many people's spin. The memories of being battered and abused by smug, brazen timeshare salespeople, has left many people soured on the idea of timeshare. But as a former timeshare salesperson, I do admit, salespeople can be a bit tough on people sometimes. But here are a few tips from an insider about how not only to survive a timeshare presentation, but really enjoy yourselves as well.
Research ahead of time
Before you arrive at your presentation, do a bit of research about the company. Even if all you do is look at a few pictures of their resorts and the locations, it will really help you get a feel for what their vacation packages are all about. When I was selling, my job was much easier and a lot more fun when the people came in having heard of our company and knowing a little bit about what we did. If you happen to be staying at a resort and attending a timeshare presentation there, chances are you are staying next door to people who actually already own. Take a minute and ask them what they think about it. It will really help you get a feel for what vacation ownership is all about.
Relax
Almost every person goes into a timeshare presentation ready to stonewall the salesperson and not give up any personal information at all. They are ready to put up a fight and never let their guard down. But timeshare salespeople are trained to try and get your guard down and get you having fun. So how bad does that sound? Go into your presentation relaxed and ready to have a good time and trust me, you will get a lot more out of your presentation and maybe even have a pleasant experience!
Ask about the “trial” package
Almost every timeshare company has a “trial” package, which allows you to try out the ownership before you fully buy it. What it usually allows you to do is purchase a week of vacation in their resorts. You then get to try it out and if you decide to buy a full ownership, they will credit the money you spent on your trial package towards the full ownership. If you don't want to, you don't have to and all you are out is the money you spent on the resort. But often times you don't learn about this until after you are done with your presentation. So if you are truly interested in the program but aren't ready to commit, ask about their trial packages.
But the bottom line is, the more you look to enjoy your timeshare presentation instead of viewing it as a boxing match, the more enjoyable it will be!
