Life Lessons From the Marines: Maneuver Warfare

To get through life like a Marine, you have to fight like us. If you're caught flat footed, you're dead.

I've established our thought patterns and I've set up the basic comparison between life and war. Now let's examine how Marines act when presented with a combat environment. To recap, life is an interactive social environment just like war. The characteristics of life are Friction, Uncertainty, Disorder, Fluidity, and Violence and Danger. So how do we act with all that against us? The answer is maneuver warfare.

Back to Marine Corps Doctrinal Publication 1. Maneuver Warfare is defined as “a war fighting philosophy that seeks to shatter the enemy's cohesion through a variety of rapid, focused, and unexpected actions which create a turbulent and rapidly deteriorating situation with which the enemy cannot cope.” Doesn't that sound like fun? Imagine doing that in your life to whatever situation or problem you're facing. Just like Marines don't hammer into enemy formations and attempt to win through sheer strength of numbers, you shouldn't keep trying to wear down your problems until one of you is only marginally less exhausted than the other.

In war we accomplish this through maneuver in both time and space. It's all about creating a tempo that the enemy cannot respond to. Arrange and channelize the battlefield so that the enemy's strengths are useless. Hit him with firepower and then move before he can react. While he's trying to figure out what to do about you, you've changed the situation and whatever plan he comes up with will be overtaken by events. Then you hit him again and break down his will to fight. Once you have broken his will it becomes easy to impose your will upon him. And (if you've been paying attention) that's what life is all about, isn't it?
