LIFE LESSONS FROM THE MARINES: UNCOMMON VALOR
When the sequel to World War One opened all across Europe and Asia the Marines fought an island hopping campaign across the Pacific, systematically cutting off supply routes to Japanese forces throughout the theatre. There were a lot of battles, death and bravery. The island of Iwo Jima took thousands of us but the actions of the Marines there prompted Admiral Nimitz to say that "uncommon valor was a common virtue." This is something that sums up Marines and their actions. Try real hard and it just might for you as well.
War is bloody awful. But when the time comes and my country makes the decision for war, it is time to step up and do what must be done. I've talked before about the bravery and dedication of Marines and how these traits are steeped in our ethos. It's not just for show. It's not just a recruiting angle. When the excrement deposits itself on the oscillating atmospheric circulator it's time to get it done. America needs to count on having a force in readiness that can respond with victory. I'm sure your friends and family would like to see that in you as well.
There will come a time in your life that will require decisive action in order to prevent negative consequences. Granted, you may never have the threat of global terrorism knocking on your front door but there are plenty of little things in life that may need some heroism. It's a sacrificial decision that you have to make ahead of time. Are you going to be the person that your loved ones are counting on or are you going to pass the buck and complain about it later? The moment of crisis is not the time to make that decision. Turn your thoughts toward future action. Prepare yourself for trials and tribulation. Then when the time comes, thank Almighty God that you are prepared enough so that uncommon valor is a common virtue with yourself.
