Life Lessons From the Marines: Core Values

First in a series of self help articles designed to help you pull your head out of your rear end and get on with life.

Too many people around the world seem to be looking for some answers to life's problems. They want simple answers to complex situations. It's been my experience that the United States Marine Corps can cure most of your afflictions. Let's start with core values.

What are core values? They are the bedrock that you settle your life upon. They are the guiding principles to every decision you make. They are the proverbial moral compass that always points true north. They are Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

Honor: Live your life with honesty and integrity. For some of you who have spent too much time in the American public school system, that means tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God. No white lies, no lies of omission, no twisted facts that are meant to conceal. Trust me, this is a refreshing way to live. It frees you from the burden of shaded truths and the oppression they bring.

Courage: This is the primary way you live an honorable life. If you think you're the Cowardly Lion who needs to go see the man behind the curtain in order to get some courage, you're probably right. But luckily for you, courage is something we all have in us already. Just like Mr. Lion, you only need to charge forth and use it.

Commitment: This is dedication to a life governed by the other two core values. It is a conscious decision, made daily, and for some, nightly, that you are dedicated to the ease and comfort that these values bring. Yes that's right, ease and comfort. You see, with a life governed by these simple values you no longer have to worry about what to say and think in any given situation. The path before you becomes clear and your mind is free from doubt. Yes, it really is just that simple.

Stay tuned, there's more to come.
