Life is Short: Eat Dessert First

Living in the moment and starting your day off in a healthy way.

That's my favorite quote which actually came from the side of a truck and ended up on my kitchen wall. Not the truck just the quote. What it reminded me of was that life is indeed very short and the sooner we realize that, the sooner we can begin to live in the present. The fact is we only have the present- the “now”.

So let's work on the "Life is Short" part first. We can't fix the past or predict the future but we can live in the moment. This takes practice, like exercising a muscle, but the results are worth it. How many times are you doing something but have your mind on something else. Something that is coming up or something else that you are worrying about that could be coming up? It takes away from what you are currently doing. When you practice being present in everything you do, life becomes more enjoyable. You appreciate each and every activity with newfound excitement and your life is enhanced. It's really that simple. Try taking a few deep breaths before you start the laundry, focus on the smell of the fabric softner and the feel of the fabric while appreciating the fact that you have a washer, a dryer and some beautiful clothes to wear. Doing laundry may seem less monotonous and you may actually enjoy it.

Getting back to my favorite quote - we'll finish up with the dessert. I am afraid to say that some people take it all too literally especially when it comes to choosing their first meal of the day. Some people (hopefully not you) eat dessert for breakfast !! Donuts, pastries, crumb buns, chocolate croissants, cookies, pop tarts, sugared cereals and bars, and soft drinks!!!!!!!!! Even bagels. These sugar laden breakfasts are an awful way to start your day. The sugar sets you up for a day of mood swings, fatique, depression, and then more sugar cravings. Studies have shown that eating a nutritious breakfast is a great way to start the day. It can actually reduce the risk of obesity, enhance performance in memory related tasks, reduce snacking and overeating at other meals, and help reduce high cholesterol. Try an experiment on yourself. Eat a nutritious breakfast everyday for one week and see the difference in how you feel and perform. Journal your results. You will be surprised at what you find.

Here are a few tips for eating "dessert" first:

  1. Plan Ahead And Start Each Day With the Most Nutritious Meal You Can

Try Oatmeal (unsweetened) with fresh blueberries, some almonds and maybe a touch of maple syrup. A touch.
  2. Remember Life is Short, Live Life To The Fullest

Take an extra moment to notice your surroundings, hear the birds chirp or smell the fresh air.
  3. Think of Your Life As a Rich Dessert. Pile it high with decadent, delectible ingredients and savor every delicious bite. You deserve it.
