Overcoming Misery

“Misery is almost always the result of thinking.” Joseph Joubert.

Don't think I am different from other people. Yes, I do experience misery. There's always a time I've been rejected, beaten, laid too low, crushed, devastated, suffocated, trapped and even bitter. Name it, I've been there, will always be in that situation because I'm still living. Ain't that grand? Well, it is ‘coz in one Swahili Warrior Song it says life has meaning only in the struggle. Triumph and defeat is not for us to decide but of the Gods. So let's celebrate struggle!

Sometimes when we're up to our necks thinking of our misery we tend to forget that there is still more to life than dwelling on our miseries. Yes, we will never experience happiness without being sad. It's always been a cycle. Why dwell on these diversities we experience when others are not lucky enough as we are?

Always Thrive for More - Get Out of the Box

See for example the great Beethoven as an epitome of a survivor. Despite his deafness it was never a hindrance for him to thrive for more. He took the greatest challenge of doing his ninth symphony ‘Ode to Joy' even though he was totally deaf. He never would have known how much the people appreciated and applauded his masterpiece until the solo contralto turned him around. Yes, he did not know, he was deaf! But he was not blind to see. That moment Beethoven lived.

The Three P's

According to Dr. Paul Pearsall, he learned a long time ago of the three P's in dealing with bad news and toxic people.

  • Don't take criticism or adversity Personally.
  • Setbacks in one area of your life are not Pervasive to other areas of your life.
  • Know that nothing is Permanent.

Challenges, obstacles and diversities will always be a part of our lives. They are unavoidable, they are what give meaning to life yet they are not that easy to overcome. There are times no matter how hard we try we just couldn't win. But hey, take it easy on yourself! That is why there are the likes of Beethoven for us to look up to. Against all odds, doubts and expectations, they thrive and even pushed their selves to a higher plane than anyone ever expected.

Life is all in our mind. If we see beyond the trials we are experiencing then we can win. Do not view obstacles in spite of adversity but because of adversity. Face life's trepidations head on. That way we can go strong, overcome mountains despite how high they are and later savor life's promised sweetness.
