It was a bitterly cold wet winter day and our younger son's birthday. Instead of ringing him on his mobile phone I sent him a text.
"Think of blue skies, white sand, hot sun on your back, kids playing in the tide and you and yours watching and having a coffee". He rang later that day and said it was a fun message and brightened up the day. There were presents too when we caught up with him later.
Telephoning or texting someone is often so helpful both ways, specially if you've been out of touch for a while. If you're a little down ring someone perhaps, you give and you receive.
We have in New Zealand a group that is called
St Johns' Caring Callers
. On a regular basis daily or weekly each Caring Caller will ring their own assigned person who has asked for this service, and wants to talk with someone or is unable to get out and about and hopefully brighten their day.
Its all first names and no addresses and all carefully scrutinized so as not to encroach on a persons safety and wellbeing.
