A Tale of Two Serial Killings

Some thoughts on the Pickton slaying and the one in Omaha.

The women went missing one by one but for the family of one of them on the east side of Vancouver, it looked as if the city would have made a greater effort had they been living on the west side of the city. The mayor of the town before the year 2000 did not want to create any special task force to find where these women would disappear every night, he just wanted to invest in the city infrastructure. Most likely the women of the night were nothing more than an inconvenience for him. Finally enough a public outcry caused him to change his mind and soon after investigating a claim that a woman was last seen on a farm, they found out that a serial killer was on the loose.

Years later investigations on the supposedly largest serial killing in the country are taking place known as the Pickton trials. The owner of the farm claimed that others had use of the farm as he explained the presence of the remains of many women. They were systematically picked up while walking the streets of the east side of the city and then taken to the farm where they were supposedly molested, then killed, dismembered and then buried. What does it take for someone to do such a heinous act as this and more importantly what does it take for city officials to react to such crimes? Perhaps he was so unhappy with himself he had to release his frustration on the women he picked up.

More recently a discontented student fired on a shopping crowd in a busy shopping mall in Omaha. Apparently his reason was that he had dumped together with the fact that he felt unpopular with his peers and was a poor performer academically.

Both of these people are connected in the way that they decided to take the lives of other people yet they differ because one wanted to go public with it and the other decided on a more secretive path of picking his victims one by one and doing his dirty deed away from the public eye.
