There are many aid organizations that deal with the protection of human rights, the welfare of the poor and hungry throughout the world. One of the many ugly sides to the exploitation of desperate people is the trade in illegal trafficking of humans. This trade is the basis for many attempts to change legislation, political positions and social conscious.
The predominant group associated with human trafficking used to be refugees attempting to flee war-ravaged countries. Today there is a wide-ranging trade including children to work camps, women into the sex industry and immigrants desperate to obtain a new start.
While there is not a significant amount of open debate regarding the continued illegal trafficking of humans, there is a lot of work being completed in the background in an attempt to reduce the amount of trade being conducted.
People for disadvantaged backgrounds are the most susceptible to human trafficking. It is unfortunate that often these people have very limited or no education, they are usually found in an environment where they are willing to do just about anything to escape, they take the word of their "saviors" as a guarantee of a better future and genuinely believe they have no alternative.
Any combination of the above factors make these people ideal candidates for human trafficking because they lack the capacity to make informed decisions for themselves. These groups also are unlikely to question any of the tactics used by the traffickers, as they do not want to risk losing their place in the new world. It is only when they are entrenched in servitude that they realize the extent of their new life and become unable to break the bonds that hold them.
There are a variety of positions that people can find themselves in when they are caught up in the trafficking cycle. Women and children usually find that they are directed to labor camps, the sex industry, domestic servitude or arranged marriages, depending on their age. Males are generally directed towards labor-intensive work camps, predominantly servicing agricultural activities. Often these people find that they are so indebted to the traffickers that they have no hope of escaping their service alone. International aid organizations are critical in ensuring these vulnerable people have some voice.
The trafficking of humans is not limited to third world African countries as many would like to believe. Human trafficking occurs, and is being fought, in countries such as China, the United States, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia just to name a few. It is only with a collaborative effort across international borders that countries can seriously address the scourge that is human trafficking.
One of the main reasons that the trade in humans has proved so lucrative is that desperate people will always resort to desperate measures to get themselves out of what they consider impossible situations. These people are so in need of relief that they are willing to take risks ordinary people would not even consider.
