If only we could feel free and safe and have less worries about crime and
its influence on our children!
Giving attention to the following issues would have a profound effect.
Parenting:
Each one of us can make a major contribution to the wellness of our society by being vigilant
with the raising of our children. They need to be protected from some elements in our society
and we must not be complacent nor negligent in disciplining them to obey the laws.
They need to be humble and respectful to all and most importantly to be productive and talented.
There has been quite a reduction of parental control and guidance for a number of decades.
This is reflected in the general rebellious attitude amongst a significant portion of our youth today.
Parents need to shelter their children from violent and profane music and movies in order to maintain
a respect for life. They seem to have become desensitized to the suffering of others.
Children naturally rebel against authority, especially when they are tryng to establish their maturity and identity.
Nonetheless, it is important for parents to remain in control regarding the restrictions they deem reasonable
to impose on their precious ones. The right attitudes must be instilled in them as early as possible.
Children mimic the behaviours of those around them so their care-givers must be excellent role models.
It is not an easy task but these skills can be improved by reading up on the subject If things get too hard
to handle, counseling might be necessary.
Schools:
There is too much emphasis placed on competing; academically and in sports, and not enough attention
given to teaching them life skills so they can be well-functioning adults who keep on trying even when failure strikes.
The slower ones can be brilliant too if they are given more time rather than being made to feel less intelligent
and inferior. Some are shy and need more time to come out of their shells.
It should not be about survival of the fittest but a good education for all.
Media:
The vanity industry eats away at self-esteem, making the public feel worthless and hideous over a minor
human flaw. They push their products aggressively and dishonestly so they can become obscenely rich.
Sadly, too many people believe the many false claims of perfection and beauty and badger themselves over
not being perfect enough! Young people are particularly vulnerable to feeling insecure about their worthiness.
Some celebrities' foolish behaviours are exhibited as trendy and fun, as if there was nothing wrong in
acting that way. They should not be role models for our children if they are behaving badly.
We can begin to turn our lives around by using more mindfulness and give out more compassion
and understanding to our fellow man. What is more beautiful than a happy child and successful adult?
Let us no longer be complacent because these unfavourable trends seem to grow consistently and
everybody suffers consequently in one way or another from them. The time is now!
