According to Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, scam means a clever and dishonest plan for making money. Moreso, scam can also be seen as the act of frauding a society or a person in a clever and dishonest way of making money.
Scammer on the other hand means someone who engages in a scamming act. It can also be seen as someone who is performing the act of fraud in a society or to his/her neighbourhood.
Really, there are some guys popularly known as “Yahoo Boys” in Nigeria. They make money in a wiser and dishonest way. But people focus on these people as scammers, why? Because they scam in an open place like cyber café, post office etc.
But permit me to say you yourself you are scammer, why? Because if you look into the definition above it does not indicate that only unemployed ones are scammer, but anyone who engage in scamming act are scammer. For instance, governors of a state, prime ministers, presidents of associations, commissioners, ministers, presidents, honourables, senators etc that love of money is more than the love of their country were also included.
Even though prophets of God that love money than their followers are also included. Some churches in Nigeria if you are poor you are nothing before the founder of the Church, only those who are rich are valued.
Causes of Scamming in Nigeria
- Unemployment
- Inadequate of quality items
- Poor academic background
- Inflation
Unemployment:
Lack of job opportunity encourage some of we youth to engage in scamming act so as to earn means of living from this act.Inadequate of quality items:
Inadequate of quality items can also cause scamming act because some of the items like wears, sandals etc made in Nigeria are fake and we youth of nowadays we prefer wearing quality wears than wearing fake (palasa) so due to this, some people engage in scamming quality items on the internet and sell it here at a cheaper rate. Don't blame them. Poor academic background:
As I said earlier that not only “yahoo boys” are engage in scamming act but our leaders are also included, because some of them are not qualify for the post they are appointed to. Inflation:
Rising and falling of our currency every day can also cause scamming 1act in Nigeria. For instance, some one that wish to buy a laptop that worth $500 which is equivalent to N75,000 which some one like me cannot afford as for now and the person have the advantage of scamming, do you think the person will not make use of the opportunity? Please tell me.
Actually, I'm not supporting the motion scamming but am encouraging our leaders to do something to the causes above so that act of scamming in Nigeria and in Africa as a whole can be reduce.
In conclusion, we are all scammers if we refuse to discharge our duty with truth and fairness as a leader of our country and to the expectation of our citizen.
