This subject is always guaranteed to light a heated discussion among people. For just a minute think to yourself; have I ever driven after having one, two, three, or more drinks? If you answered yes think about this. Did you have a close call, run that yellow/red light when you normally wouldn’t have? Did you swerve, or for that split second crossed the yellow line? Did you drive 5-10 miles an hour faster or slower than usual? Did you have to step on the gas because you pulled out in front of another vehicle? slam on your brakes because you ran up on someone to fast? The sad reality is a lot of us are guilty of doing this at least once in our lives.
When most people mention DUI they think of a teenager who’s been out drinking then gets behind the wheel . Unfortunately that’s not always true. Adults can be just as guilty as the teens. How many working adults go out to eat lunch and have a cocktail, wine or beer with their meal? Which one of them have another drink after their meal before driving back to the office?
How many of you are parents? If your not a parent, I’m sure you have friends or family. Now close your eyes and imagine a driver who has just had 1 or 2 drinks. He/she thinks they are fine. He/she under estimates distance and pulls out in front of one of your family or friends. Soon after you receive a phone call they are being rushed to the Hospital in critical condition; or worse they are not going to make it. How does this make you feel? Now multiply this feeling a hundred times over. This feeling is how you might actually feel if it really happens to you.
So why do we continue to do this?
