How to Deal with a Deaf Parent
Not everyone has a deaf parent, and to the people who do it becomes normal. Yet as you start to come upon teenage years the parent becomes a negative and something to worry about, and in this guide I will help you as I have been there and done it on how to deal with a deaf parent.
Conclude
Firstly go to town with your deaf parent, and look to see how different they are to other people. You should really see (unless they are really embracing) that the difference isn't that bad, considering that your parent is classed as disabled count yourself lucky. Here is a method that really works, count 3 things your parent does which other parents do, here are 3 things that my mother does; she drives, she has a sense of humor and she is a good cook. The list goes on, this is therefore started the first step of dealing with the issue
Communicate
Is your parent you friend? Well if not then it might be your key problem with why you can't deal with them. Communication is the key in everything (what they say in p.s.e lessons), but you might of grasped that talking to a deaf person is difficulte; there are two different roots on how to talk to deaf people, the first is talking to parents who have been deaf all their life because they have trouble structuring sentences and sounding phonetics, the other group are the people who have been deaf for some while as they still talk normally but it is difficulte as they cant lip read or hear phonetics. Learn with them how to talk as it is not just them learning to talk with you, it is vice versa.
Respect
As an old saying goes, "Don't judge someone before you have been in their skin and lived in their shoes." This saying goes along way in life and something we forget quite a lot, but remember that it is not easy for your parent either. They might forget that they are deaf and they have a right to, therefore you must respect that they are a human being and must act like them. Forget they are deaf and forget what others think and you will finally accept and have completed my challenge.
If you follow these three steps you will come to terms, but remember that the steps look easy but take along time to fully complete.
