Mimi

A book Review on the novel "Mimi".

There are a few novels that reach people on several different levels. Mimi by Agnes Vardy is one of those novels. Readers of all genres would enjoy reading this novel. This story of a young baroness has a little bit of everything, romance, history, mystery and more. It's full of intrigue and something unexpected in each chapter.

Mimi is considered a romantic/historic novel. It takes place in a war torn Hungry, mainly World War 2. There are a lot of different historical aspects to the novel, but they don't seem as important as some of the romantic aspects. Vardy introduces a mystery in the beginning and carries it through to the very end of the novel. Her readers are kept wanting more. The mysterious note keeps readers hanging on wanting more hoping to get a clue to unlock the mystery Mimi holds. This novel shows what Hungarians endured in the second world war as well as punishments they received for breaking the law. Many novels we read look at things from a Jewish or German viewpoint, but Mimi takes a different point.

There are not a lot of characters, so it's easy to keep track of who is in the novel, and what is going on with them. But there are one or two story lines that follow each character, some have more. It's hard to follow which character goes to each other's storyline, or what storyline Vardy is focusing on. The battle between the romantic and historic elements make it hard for one to read the novel in one or two sittings. It makes it confusing as to what is truly important to the story and what Vardy really wants to express in this novel. Some of the story lines behind the character of Mimi, reflects some of Vardy and her family's own experiences. The novel follows Mimi's viewpoint which has advantages and disadvantages, the character is young, so one gets a young view of things. The readers will find themselves attaching to one or two of the characters.

Vardy's descriptions are amazing. Those descriptions make her readers feel as if they are actually a part of the story . That they are there witnessing every event, emotion, and hardship, it helps the readers to identify with the stories. Vardy chooses every word wisely and effectively. She's able to draw her readers in and captivate them. The novel may have it's rough points, but it's worth the read. It may be fiction, but there is some fact and truth mixed in with the historical elements. Mimi may be considered a romantic novel, but a classic romantic novel. One without sex, lust and other things that romance novels today are so focused on. It's a novel that portrays a man trying to woo the woman he loves to prove his worth, not to get her into bed.

Agnes Vardy does a wonderful job with her novel. If you are interested in history, romance or simply a good read, then this is a novel you should check out. It may take a little while to make it through the rough parts, but again it's completely worth the wait. You may learn a little something new. Many people would enjoy this novel and should give it a chance.
