Loss of Ambiguity in Tom Mcloughlin’s Film Adaptation of the Novel The Turn of the Screw
by Kerry Webber, Jan 4, 2009
Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw is famous for its representation and combination of beauty, horror, and ambiguity. The novel’s presentation of ambiguity still shocks its readers today, leaving a sense of unease at its reading. Due to its success in provoking a reaction in people, the novel has been converted into many different formats, including films, plays, and an opera by Benjamin Britten. An interesting example of one of the films is Tom McLoughlin’s adaptation titled The Haunting of Helen Walker, where a lot of the novel’s ambiguity has unfortunately been lost. This loss can be noticed in many separate aspects of the film, including its lack of certain key facets from the novel, its characterization and its ending.

Valkyrie
by Geraldine, Dec 30, 2008
Bryan Singer’s complex wartime thriller starring Tom Cruise as a German officer who conspires to assassinate Hitler, VALKYRIE is based on true events and compensates for its lack of vigor with loving attention to detail and fine performances from its ensemble cast.
