If you happen to live in Southern California, you may want to be somewhat conservative in your spending. However, even in this recession economy, some families still say tradition outweighs the economic issue. They don't want their children missing out on what they are used to.
Personally I don't do the Halloween thing very often, I'd say you need to be wise especially in this tumultuous time. I say you can still have fun even while being thrifty, sometimes the issues make us have to forego traditions of excess.
