Solutions to America's Economic Problems

The effects of utilizing prison labor.

America has all the tools to solve its problems, but doesn't know how to use them.

For example, factories are built overseas where wages are lower. Why not build factories in our prisons, where wages can be just as low as those paid overseas? Think of it, a factory making toys could be set up in a prison where one has no problem with getting the workers to their posts, producing goods which are constantly subject to safety checks, and where the transportation costs from factory to warehouse would be far lower. The prison inmates would offset the cost of their incarceration, gain a few legal dollars, and more importantly, skills.

They would learn how to operate in a work setting, and as they became more adept, could be moved up to management. All the reasons why American companies should go overseas have been dispensed with, all the reasons that the business should remain have been emphasized. Agriculture is another area which begs for the utilization of Prisoners. Instead of having so many unfilled jobs which provokes illegal immigration, gangs of prisoners could be brought in, thus solving the food crisis.

The problem is in creative thinking, not in any logistics. Convict Labor built parts of America; worked on farms, roads, in mines; the reason this was abandoned was because citizens needed the jobs. As citizens of America are not doing these jobs, there can be no outcry. Imagine the fields in California being planted and reaped by prisoners, meaning there were no jobs for Mexican immigrants. Once there are no jobs, there is no reason to cross the border.

China has become extremely wealthy by taking jobs from Americans. The process is simple; have a big American Company open a manufacturing plant, train local workers, go on for a few years, then when the Chinese are ready, dispatch the Americans, take over the factory, slap a new name on the goods, and sell them cheaper than the Americans did.

The American company might make a profit for a few years, but then, once the Chinese take the factory, it will not merely be loss, it will be put out of business. Simply put if American Name Brand sells for $1000 and the Chinese company which took over that American Name Brand is producing the exact same thing with a Chinese Name and selling it for $700, which would you buy? If instead of going to China, the American Name Brand builds a factory in the Prison, and prisoners are producing the goods, then one can buy an American Name Brand for $650. There is no downside.

Nice article. This comes up now and again. The problem is most prisons are actually private businesses contracted by the States. And they are too busy raping the USA by overcharging the States per prisoner. They aren't to hip on the idea of not be included in any further business venture.
