This is not meant to be comprehensive, but it meant to bring some awareness to a current problem. Maybe give you some conversation topics. The educational system perpetrates class and racial inequalities in several ways:
- Because schools are traditionally funded at a local level, if the community is financially poor the educational quality lacks. Conversely in locals with high incomes the educational quality is high.
- When the quality of education is low, people tend to vote down increases in spending. Additionally if there is funding from property taxes, the lower value of homes in some neighborhoods reduces income from taxes.
- Because the decision makers tend to be educated and well off, they tend to be somewhat unresponsive to the needs of those dissimilar to themselves.
- Fundamentalist religious ideals can seep into public education. This is especially true if the local majority hold those views.
- Poorer family's are more likely to move more frequently. Since curriculum varies from district to district, poor children are more likely to fall behind.
- The language of these groups tends to differ from that of the middle and upper class. In part this means that they will not conform as easily to the demands of the larger society, such as standardized testing, or employment opportunities.
- If the child of a racial minority who is being discriminated against in employment is unable to receive proper health care and nutrition there learning abilities will be impaired. The school system then further disadvantages them by requiring them to function at a standardized level.
- The costs of extracurricular activities, lab fee's, textbooks, etc. puts pressure on poorer students to take jobs to pay for them. This can lead to worst grades or even dropping out.
- The exorbitant cost of higher education causes poor students to either not go to college or go to lower quality schools.
- Because racial minorities and poorer people tend to geographically clump they tend to go to go to schools where the majority of students are in a homogeneous socioeconomic status.
- Tracking supports a segregated population. If, for example, a child doesn't speak English as their first language their grades or test results will suffer and they will be placed into lower track classes. There results tend to leave them discouraged and incapable of living up to their potential and are given a simpler curriculum that reduces there ability to "get back on track." in addition lower placement gives a child a feeling of inferiority which can last a lifetime and can be a self fulfilling prophesy.
Just some food for your thoughts.
