Teaching is a very conscious and alert activity where one has to deal with different individuals at the same time. Therefore, at time, it seems pleasant to deal with different group of learners but simultaneously with lots of difficulties and complexities arises for the facilitator as well while dealing with the diverse groups. That is why it is said that teaching is a spontaneous occupation because facilitator seldom takes or decides immediately to do some sort of actions either within or outside the classroom scenario.
Although it is very difficult to define and describe the characteristics of a good teaching, no doubt, number of characteristic and qualification required to become a good teacher. The foremost feature of a good teacher is the command on the content knowledge and pedagogical skills both with equal proposition. Only decision making ability will enable teacher to present and deliver his/her lesson effectively.
Why:
Decision-making is a careful step that helps teachers/facilitators to take selective action in the light of sense hypothesis. Its not healthier to pour out all information and content knowledge in student‘s mind without knowing their need and context realities. A teacher must have the understanding of the impact of his/her decision which s/he takes in the interest of the class that’s why teaching is recognized as reflective and thinking based journey, its not monotones way of delivering things. It assists the decision maker to take action with thorough reflections that how it will help children to learn and what would be the desired outcomes.
Field teachers often complain that they won’t be able to complete task on the given time due to the abrupt discussion or some new arising questions!!! My personal believe is that. It’s again an opportunity for facilitator to think that sometimes it is fine to proceed accordingly but being a diligent person, it good to be flexible in our plans and accommodates ourselves as per the need and desire of the time and context.
The major responsibility of a teacher/ facilitator is not just complete the syllabus but also make sure that learners could produce meaningful outcome. Besides their personalities also groomed with the understanding of attitude and applied skills because the aim of education is the holistic development of a child and all depend on the willingness of a facilitator/ teacher whose decision either MAKE or BREAK child’s life therefore decision plays a vital role in the children’s grooming.
How:
We often hear an old saying “I am because I am thinking”. An intelligent decision requires a lot of deep, critical and analytical thinking to expect deliberate optimistic outcomes. Therefore, it is necessary for an individual to challenge, analyze its own idea, see the alternatives, and choose the best one.
Dean Chesham said, “Let me give so much time to improvement of myself that I shall have not time to criticize other” Best Brains are those who always in the process of rethinking to construct a new beginning. I believe teachers have also the same path to produce some thing new but in the process of the production of something new, they face some hurdle and barrier and those hindrances often affect their performance therefore” to make a difference” one has to sacrifices and brings out changes in the lives of learners.
Impediments that affects effective decision
Some impediments are going to share which affects effective decision:
- Teachers have lack of freedom to take action on the behalf of the class or all students.
- Some influential parents do not allow teachers to depict any conclusion from their children.
- Previous teacher’s decision has long-lasting repercussions and effects. Hence often new class teacher feel uncomfortable in the beginning to adjust with students.
- Some experienced teachers have high expectations about the newly enrolled students which also create unhealthy atmosphere for children to fulfill their demands
- Time factor is also one of the major obstacle, because teacher ‘s job is not only deliver the lesson, but s/he would have to see the other managerial and administration matters to run the class smoothly along with academic activity
- Some times school policies don’t harmonize with teacher’s perceptions level to draw some conclusion.
- Our School system has long hierarchy in the roles and responsibilities at different level therefore it become difficult that who will take decision and in what capacity or position for instance; Class teacher, Subject teachers, Head teacher etc.
- If class room wouldn’t seem as conducive learning environment, then it will difficult for teacher to work with students mutual understanding and synergy
- Some time our decisions don’t correlate with student’s previous learning and existing knowledge. Therefore, in the end, we find unpredicted result.
- It should also consider that every child is unique and important in our class so we need to careful while making decision/s and its outcomes would help each child.
- Often classroom seating raise issues for teacher that whether s/he have to instruct to the whole class or a particular group or else an individual.
- If we have ever noticed that while watching T.V how much we can remember the number of the advertisements, in the same manner teacher encounters with several behaviors. Therefore, it is difficult to make any decision in the light of different experience because not all experiences are recording as a diverse way of learning.
Suggestions
Whatever have been shared in the light of general observation, it is difficult to find out the solution for all of the impediments because it varies from situation to situation. Smart teachers carefully handle the problem keeping in mind the diversity and sensitivity as well.
