Earning an Online Degree

Earning a degree doesn't have to mean waking up early and wasting your day with boring lectures. Most of us can be more productive at home studying at our own pace. Here are five reasons why online degrees may or may not be for you.

Advantages

  1. Cost of gas. It's most likely you don't live near your school. Save gas and stay home.
  2. Cost of books. Many online degree programs use either e-books or less textbooks than on-campus degrees. And even if you are required textbooks, you can always find a good dose of them on Google Book Search and Internet Archive.
  3. Cost of school fees. The orientation fees, activity fees etc, are gone. They are usually waived by universities because they know you won't be needing them.
  4. Cost of tuition. Online universities are often cheaper than on-campus degrees.
  5. Earn money. The time you spend driving to and from school, buying books, and wasting time in lecture halls, you could be earning an income. Online degrees allow you to earn a degree while working.

Disadvantages

  1. Employers are probably more suspicious of the quality of online degrees, since most online colleges are less than ten years old.
  2. You may never meet your instructors in person, which may shorten your recommendation list if you are planning on receiving higher education.
  3. Typically courses are a lot shorter. Ranging from 3 to 10 weeks. Most colleges restrict the amount of courses you take in these short periods of time so it is not as flexible.
  4. Restrictive degrees. You won't find that many English, math or science degrees online. Online degrees are designed for those who want to take a more practical approach to their education, which enables them to get a job as soon as they finish their degree.
  5. Neglect of alarm clock!
