This year was a bit slow to start due to the fact that my daughter just began her first year at university. This is an exciting time to be a young person and that statement will always be true no matter what the year. She went through drama of feeling like she was lost in the largest ocean and the only person who couldn't swim or find the right place to be but all that has now passed and we truly are into the business of learning again. Everything is so much more at university and we feel all grown up, most of the time. Changes to the curriculum eventuate because of the state of technology, political agenda and demand. These are all factors in the state of the change to the popularity of a course or line of study that is on offer. The Bachelor of Business course with a double major is a recent addition to the curriculum at Auckland University and it has been developed from the need of businesses to have employees who have business savvy and who are computer literate.
Statistics are coming through that show this course to be a 'success' and that some of the people coming through it have been headhunted for jobs with our tax department. (Apparently 15% of students from this course have been offered jobs in this department). It is always better to be employed and have a well paid job rather than the other alternative of being unemployed but there is a possibility that more opportunities will open as these students develop skills and confidence in their own abilities and move into area's that are of interest to them. Some possible developments from his course will be in the marketing and computing skills area's that are incorporated into this course. There is plenty of scope to move into better relationships within the business sector and the wider communities .These new courses take time to grow and are built upon from the ground up.
It is wonderful to see our young people be given opportunities to grow and expand their lives in positive directions. Learning to be a part of the community and acting appropriately within it is a source of civic pride. This education opportunity offers our young people the chance to show off their knowledge and competencies in arena that is global. That is if they want to go that way!
