Money and Economics Vocabulary
All units of money should be represented in the homsechool unit study. Include words such as penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and dollar. Other good vocab words to include are: money, save, spend, and budget. Only choose words that are of the correct level for the studen you are teaching.
Money and Economics Reading and Writing
There are many libray books that deal with the subject of counting money, recognizing money, how to shop, and saving money for bigger purchases.. Some popular titles include: "The Coin Counting Book," "Funny Money," and "The Story of Money." Ask a librarian for help if you have trouble finding these or others in the library card catalog. After your student reads the book, have them right a small report telling what they learned. Another option is to write a fictional story about a person who needs money or is saving money for a purchase.
Money and Economics Math Skills
Money is all about math skills. The internet has a plethora of printable worksheets that have to do with money. Worksheets, however, can get boring, and real world examples can be more fun. The weekly supermarket trip can provide money math skills. Let the child write down and add the costs of food. Or set up a pretend shop at home and practice that way.
Money and Economics Arts and Crafts
Every good homeschool unit study has arts and crafts in it. A great idea for a lesson on money and economics is to create a piggy bank out of an old plastic jar and some construction paper. Cut a slit for coins in the side of the jar and glue on a piggy face, curly tail, and some legs that stick out to the side. Encourage your child to save money and to spend it wisely.
