How To Teach History

Here are some resources for teaching history.

If you're a teacher of history and interested in learning about history, there are many learning and historical resources to teach history .

The internet is an excellent teaching resource for history. Put "history" and/or a specific historical event, such as "The March on Washington ," in your search engine, and you get many different websites that deal with this subject .

Make a list of these websites. Read and study the information .

Other resources for teaching and learning history include :

Literature. There are many books on historical subjects. There are nonfiction books and works of fiction. If you're interested in a specific historical event and/or a specific historical period make a list of nonfiction and fiction books on the subject. There are also many children's books on historical events and historical periods that you can assign your children to read. Also, ask them the difference between the nonfictional and fictional account of the historical event and/or period. Many of the classicial writers from Shakespeare to Dickens have written books on historical characters, events and historical periods .

This literature, including children's literature, includes not only fiction, but biographies, autobiographies, tales, folktales, poetry, plays .

There are also many documentary films, filmscripts, TV, videotapes on historical events. Again, these can be nonfiction or fictional versions .

Teachers can also have field trips to museums, historical sites .

Quizzes, triva quizzes, crossword puzzles can also help in learning history .

Toys and games like "history detectives" are excellent in learning history .

Oral histories are also excellent histories. These can be read from books and/or you can assign your children to collect oral histories .

Much music, songs, folksongs are connected to historical periods and historical events. Songs of the Civil War or the Civil Rights period can be used to help children to learn about these historical events and historical periods .

Lectures on historical characters, historical events, historical periods .

Children can be assigned to give these lectures themselves. They can also be assigned to write poetry, plays, fiction on these subject. They can also make their own films and videotapes on these subjects .

Children can also set up and manage their own websites in which they can write their articles, publish their poems, stories, plays, oral histories, and their videotapes of history .
