There are many reasons to why students should learn about evolution. One of the reasons is because this theory is applied in biological sciences such as ecology, genetics, developmental biology, and systematics. It is also used by sciences that involve history such as anthropology, astronomy, geology, and paleontology. Therefore, if students want to study any of these sciences they need to understand evolution first.
A student who studies biology must learn about evolution in order to be able to answer questions like: why the organisms of today look the way they look. Even more, to understand the world we are in. If students know what natural selection is, they can understand the events that occur because of this process. For example, they would know the reason why some insects resist pesticides, which is due to survival of the fittest; those who possess a stronger resistance to the pesticide survive and pass it down to their offspring.
Learning about evolution also helps in understanding the rate, nature, and dispersion of genetic deceases. Students can understand, for example, that sickle-cell anemia exists among African Americans because the sickle-cell gene proved to be helpful for the resistance of malaria.
In conclusion, it is important to know about evolution because it helps to explain many of the mysteries in life. Evolution has opened the doors to more knowledge in all scientific fields, and it continues to open them.
