Do you understand what and how this technology is used in the classroom? What is the fuss about? As parents it is time you plugged in and became aware of the situation. Wi-Fi is the wire-less technology that allows computers to be used in the classroom without being limited by the cord and attached to a power point. It sure does have its advantages but with those advantages comes the down side of technology that we are only beginning to find out about. Recent research has found that Wi-Fi emits a low level radiation similar to those levels associated with the mobile phone usages and phone masts.
In New Zealand, we have protested about the similar levels of radiation from power lines that cross some of our schools and we have worried about the phone masts that have been erected near some of our schools. Many people believe that it does cause sicknesses and cancers and that more research is needed to ascertain the dangers of being in the vicinity of such low levels of radiation. Most people do not realize that "Wi-Fi" emits the same levels of radiation as a mobile phone or power transformers and yet we allow these computers to be used in our schools while our children are standing right next to them.
There are now scientists who have expressed their fears that these low levels of radiation could have long term effects and they could possibly cause cancer and senility. Many of these European scientists are calling for a ban on Wi-Fi in schools until further studies have been carried out. There have been studies on mobile phone users and the adverse effects from that, I would assume that Wi-Fi would be similar but until the studies have been done we will not know for sure.
