Should Cell Phones be Allowed in School?

A brief text regarding whether or not cell phones should be allowed in school.

Cell phones should be allowed in school, only if they are turned off during school times. They are great tools when used properly. Many teachers will disagree, because cell phones can interrupt classes and lectures. Yet I will tell you many reasons why cell phones should be allowed in schools.

First of all, cell phones should be allowed because of emergencies. How many times have heavy rain and weather problems caused a block in your line? How many times have you tried to call home for a very important emergency that needs to be addressed immediately, yet the only available phone line is being used by one of the other thousand kids at your school? The cell phone is the answer to that problem. Just being able to feel that emergencies can be addressed immediately is worth having a cell phone.

Second of all, cell phones should be allowed because many parents are concerned with their kid's safety. Having a cell phone is the answer to that. Many parents want to be able to immediately alert their kids of changes, even if it is just a text message or voicemail. Many more parents feel much safer just because they know their kids are in their reach. Again, cell phones are the answer to that.

Last but not least, new technology is being created everyday. Are we going to ban all those? Are we going to constantly ban all technology because it could be distracting? The same is with everything, guns were invented on a purpose for protecting yourself, yet many people manipulated it to kill and threaten others.

The point is, all things depend on how they are used. How can schools ban something that only sometimes distracts teachers, and can be easily remedied? Say the school bans weaponry; that is not unreasonable, because it can be life threatening. Yet cell phones, our major source of communications are banned, and they can cause barely any harm, other than minor distractions.

You should now see that cell phones should be allowed in schools. Every situation in which cell phones can be distracting can be easily remedied. The good sides of cell phones outweigh the bad by far, so it is a good idea to lift bans on cell phones (if the teachers make sure cell phones do not cause distractions).

I understand your viewpoints however I have only a few questions. First of all, who needs their kid at school to handle a family emergency. Every school I have seen has an intercom. If it is an emergency, It takes seconds for the secretary to hit the button and summon your child to the office. Second, I would like to know how many people have suffered injury, loss of property, or any damage because they could not send a text message to their child at school. Third, why would we want to add stress to the teacher in the class by asking her to be the cell phone police, and if so and she confiscates one that costs upwards of $300 to replace, what happens then? Fourth, Would it be ok if kids brought video games, a digital camera, or any other method of cheating on tests? Fifth and last question; What about those of us who pay taxes for schools. We remember when we were in school but we do not remember a necessity for cell phones. Some of us remember when it was not a \\\"necessity\\\" to have our own phone line. Times change, but have they changed so much that now children at school have to be reached at a moments notice? If you could answer these questions, I think I could jump on board.
