How to Put Together a Fashionable Look That is Just Right for You

Finding the proper fitting clothes in line with todays style can sometimes be nerve-racking even for the most fashion-conscious woman. Following are some suggestions for women of all sizes and ages that will give you renewed confidence in putting a look together appropriate for your personality and in line with your body type and age.

How to find clothes that fit your personality and budget...

  1. Try to choose clothes that fit your personality, body type and budget. Also, if you are not at your ideal weight currently, do not try to squeeze into a smaller size. This is the same as over packing a suitcase for a weekend trip. If you have gained some weight, then step into a size where you'll feel comfortable: not baggy and not too tight.
  2. Be realistic about your figure. For example, I have worn clothes anywhere from a six to ten. I look a little thin when I'm able t fit into the six; and look kind of average at size ten. Sometimes, I'll even need to alter the cut and style as to what I'm buying. There are certain items that look better on a size six and others that look best on a size ten.
  3. Don't, whatever you do, buy a smaller size because you think you will eventually fit into it and because it is on sale. Let me predict what will happen: You will save the smaller size and by the time you do get around to losing the weight (especially if you are two sizes up), you will want something new anyway. Hording a bunch of smaller sizes, hoping to get into them one day rarely works. Stay within the present. Just make sure that if you are a bit heavier than what you use to be, you don't start crossing the line where your weight is uncomfortable for you. Being too thin or too heavy in either direction isn't good for your overall disposition.
  4. When buying pants, notice how the pants are constructed. Some pants nowadays fit slightly below the stomach and don't offer much of a zipper. For some women, this may be a problem. If you have gained some weight, you are better off to pick a large size particularly if the pants come in small, medium and large. For example, if you are comfortable in a ladies size ten you will need to realize that most generally you need to take a large size as opposed to medium when visiting a shop geared toward juniors apparel. If the item is one that will fit a junior figure, it is unlikely you can get by wearing what is considered average for ladies. If you are truly most comfortable in ladies size apparel, then when fitting yourself into a junior item, size up one or two sizes. The same can be said, except in reverse, if you are most comfortable in a junior size item. In other words, try sizing down a size or two when trying on a ladies size.
  5. What if you are Big and Beautiful? You can still enjoy the trends; however, the same discernment must be used regarding being cognizant about proper cut and sizing. Be particularly thoughtful about what you choose for wearing apparel. Just like any sized person, you don't want to wear anything that is too tight, too big or attracts the wrong kind of attention. Find catalogs with stylish creations geared toward women in your size range. Observe how certain styles appear on the plus size models and try purchasing several of your favorite items for yourself.
  6. Now there are many discounters who carry plus sizes with clothing that is quite fashionable. The main thing is to be aware of your body type and wear items that are in good taste.
  7. If you are a large woman with a very large top portion, it is recommended you do not wear something extremely low cut. This is a bit unflattering. If you are already big all over, there is the strong possibility the top area falls in line with the rest of you. In fact, regardless of size, women that walk around with flimsy tops and unsupported upper portions do not look trendy or sexy. A bit of advice: Keep everything in perspective and make clothing choices that are in good taste for your age and body type. And if you are wearing something that “dips” a bit, keep everything supported.
  8. Not only do trends apply to the clothes you wear, they also are applicable to your hairstyle. Wearing a hairstyle that is decades old will not help you “pull off” your sophisticated, trendy new look so make sure that you are wearing your hair reflective of your personality and today's fashion. Also, the cut should be complimentary to the shape of your face. In example, my face is rather long and slightly angular. The best cut for me is probably something that cuts off the severity of a long, narrow face or a cut coming in at chin level or thereabouts. Currently, I wear my hair short; however, I notice when I cut the bangs high, emphasis tends to go up around my forehead and eyes. Since my eyes are possibly my most respectable feature, I highlight this area. You can do the same: Determine what characteristic is your best. Also decide what is the shape of your face. Consult with your hairdresser and decide on one of today's popular styles that is most appropriate for the shape of your face and one that will accentuate your features.
  9. You may need to make some changes as far as the color of your hair in order to pull off your total look. Just make sure your new color fits well with your complexion tone as well as today's styles.
  10. How about makeup: With some women less makeup truly looks better. Some women are so naturally attractive that overemphasizing everything generally detracts from their appearance rather than enhancing it. The first rule of thumb is: take care of your complexion. Make sure you wash your face once or twice a day and follow a skin care routine. Also drink plenty of cool, clear water to keep your skin hydrated. When keeping yourself healthy, especially your skin, think clear: clear beverages (like water) for clear skin. If you have skin issues then consult a reliable dermatologist.
  11. If you are youthful you may get by using a tad bit more eye makeup due to the diversity of clothes available for younger women. Women, who are more mature, generally are better off playing down their makeup. I always notice when a woman of more mature years is wearing too much face powder. I tend to look at the layer of powder rather than her face. The best way to go is to apply and blend and make everything as subtle as possible. The idea is to bring out your best features rather than de-emphasizing them with overly shadowed lids or cheek bones made up with heavy rouge. Unless you are a professional make up artist, you'll want to stay away from over-lining your eyes or over-powdering your face.
  12. Make sure you buy clothes that are appropriate for the occasion. Granted some clothes cross over on both sides of the line. In example, many day items can be accessorized to make an attractive evening ensemble. However, some evening accessorizing will look out of place in the day. This can be an easy mistake as silver and gold accessories can now be worn during the day or at night.
  13. Color makes a difference. Color should compliment your complexion and hair color. In example, if you are pale white certain pale colors won't help you look your best. Don't wear anything that will generally make you appear washed out.
  14. Constantly educate yourself about style. Keep your look up to date in a manner that is appropriate for your age and regardless you station or status do always try to look your best.
