How to Wear Purple

Purple is the "must have" color for fall and winter. Here's how to wear purple even if you think you can't.

It's destined to be the hottest color trend for winter 2009. And no wonder the color purple has been revived since it represents both royalty and spirituality. Although some people believe they can't wear this color, there's a shade of purple that will flatter almost anyone. Expect to see an inspiring collection of purples hitting the fashion runways and covering the bodies of fashion conscious women everywhere. Need some ideas on how to add purple to your wardrobe? Here are some suggestions on how to wear this subtly mysterious color:

Find a shade that flatters your skin.

There are many shades of purple extending from the blue to the red end of the spectrum. Somewhere along this continuum, there's a purple that's right for you. If you have fair skin, deeper shades of purple with blue undertones add a beautiful contrast to a light complexion. If you skin is darker, pastel purples such as lilac can be flattering. Dark haired women look stunning in shades of violet, while warmer skin shades and redheads look best in purples with red undertones. To discover the shade that's right for you, visit a fabric store and hold various purple fabric shades up to your face and see which ones enhance your features. Keep these shades in mind when shopping for fall and winter clothing.

Keep it simple and classy

Purple makes an elegant fashion statement when kept simple and clean. Don't overdo the look by wearing too much purple or cheapen it by adding other bright colors. Try pairing various shades of purple with charcoal gray, dove gray, camel, or dark brown for a flattering look that that can go to dinner or the office. Dark purples take on a more mysterious tone when paired with black, especially for an evening out. Sticking with the neutrals keeps the look of purple classic and elegant.

Try adding a touch of purple with accessories

If you're not comfortable wearing purple, test the fashion waters by adding purple accessories. Try a pair of plum shoes or boots or carry a purple clutch bag with a neutral outfit to add a touch of color. Don't forget to wear jewelry with purple stones to add mystery and intrigue to a dark brown, charcoal gray, or black outfit. Some beautiful purple semiprecious stones to consider are amethyst, sugilite, and the multifaceted fluorite. Jewelry is a safe and subtle way to tap into the purple trend.

Bring out your purple eye shadows

Although it may sound like a throwback to the 1980's, purple eye shadow in rich, saturated shades can be quite flattering. Dark shades of violet and plum will flatter most eye colors and can make green eyes “pop”. Stay away from pale or frosted shades of purple eye shadow which look too dated. Deep purple shadows can also be mixed with browns for a subtle, yet flattering look.

There's something purple for everyone this year, it's just a question of finding the shade that's perfect for you. Have fun experimenting!
