Autumn Winter 2008: The New Coat Trends

As summer comes to an end and autumn begins, the high street is stocked up with fresh new styles for the upcoming season. It's the perfect time to invest in a brand new coat that will see you through the cold months.

Remember to pick a neutral shade, such as black or grey, and choose a length that falls below the hips, but finishes just above the knees. This is the most versatile cut and will ensure that your coat takes you from the mild weather in autumn right through the depths of winter, and is still going strong at the start of spring.

Trench

Probably the most popular style this season is the chic trench coat. Double or single breasted & belted, this type of coat usually comes adorned with decorative buttons & straps. Hitting just at the knee & tapering in at the waist, this is the most flattering cut for all body types - a timeless design classic that goes with everything.

TIP: For a bold look, team your neutral trench with a brightly coloured beret.

Princess

Elegant and feminine, the princess coat is another style which flatters all body types. It has an on-trend babydoll shape, puff sleeves, and a slight flare towards the bottom. For the most fashionable look, hunt down a princess coat with classic ladylike details, such as pleats and bows.

TIP: If you'll be wearing your princess coat with dresses, make sure the hem of your dress falls either shorter or at the same length as your coat.

Tulip

An extremely fashionable coat shape, the voluminous tulip works best on taller women. This is one of the most original coat shapes on the high street this season. If you feel daring enough to give it a go, try pairing the tulip with drainpipe jeans, or opaque tights and your winter boots. Keep the rest of your outfit simple - block colours, clean lines, and a flattering cut.

TIP: For an original look, ditch your black opaque tights and go for a coloured pair instead - another huge trend for the season.

Double Breasted

Double breasted coats are smart, chic, and make a real style statement. They're not as easy to wear as the aforementioned shapes, so for the simplest look, find one with striking, oversized buttons, and a length that finishes above the knee. This is a style that will never date, so if your budget can allow it, it's a good idea to invest in a classic version - pure wool, a straight cut, and androgynous appeal.

TIP: This style should be avoided if you have a large bust, because the bulk and decorative buttons across the chest will give you the dreaded "shelf" effect.

Pea

The cutest new coat style for winter is the pea coat, inspired by the swinging sixties, with a short length and swing shape. With a youthful feel and timeless appeal, they look best with sky high heels and thick winter tights. For a fresh, quirky look, try teaming your pea coat with anything monochrome, and mini skirts or knee high boots. As with the tulip coat, keep your dresses shorter or at the same length as the hem. This is the best style for those who prefer a more casual and relaxed feel to their appearance.

TIP: Go for the popular mod look and wear your pea coat with lashings of black eyeliner.
