That depends who you believe when interpreting the calendar, although we weren't there when it was made there has been much speculation. The Mayans were world reknown, millennia after their civilization fell, as astronomers and mathematicians. The reason the 2012 prediction has gained notoriety is due to the fact that according to historians, the Mayan calendar is more accurate even than our modern one.
Some speculators say the 2012 prediction points to earth's doomsday, or commonly referred to by most as the apocalypse. Mel Gibson made light of this when he made his film apocalypto. The question remains however, what event were the mayans making reference to?
Most interpreters of the calendar say that the 2012 event is not apocalyptic in nature and that the reason that the apocalyptic interpretation is widely propagated is that "To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting is a chance for a lot of people to cash in." according to an article in USA Today.
However, the Bible does speak of the End Times and Armageddon, that will come to pass. Whether the 2012 event, predicted by the mayans is apocalyptic is not clearly stated in the calendar. Could it be? The possibility exists.
I am Christian and anyone who has read the Bible knows Jesus Christ is going to return, given that no one knows the day or the hour, it is best to be prayerful, watchful, and ready. The Bible states it this way "Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame." Revelation 16:15 (King James Version)
Were the Mayans predicting the apocalypse? That is unclear, but remember these words and keep them close.
"Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away" Matthew 24:35. Those words fell from the lips of Jesus Christ, and they are far more reliable than any calendar, gauranteed. He is returning, that is His promise. So, be watchful and prayerful, and God Bless.
