Stonehenge is another similar mystery. Why was it built? What was its function? Who built it and when? And why are some of the stones still standing atop one another so precisely without any cement or mortar?
We're going to set a course back to the mainland of Europe for a short time. Here we find the remains of the Greek Empire, a massive and powerful society that spanned the known world. At the center of this empire was Athens, and in this fallen city we find the great Parthenon. It is decorated on all sides by renderings of the great victories of Athens over its enemies. One side is particularly interesting for this conversation. It is the story of Athens' victory over Poseidon. This is intriguing because Poseidon was the god of Atlantis, and the battle's spoils were an island. The seafaring Atlanteans would have no doubt contested Athenian control of the island, possibly spawning a war. Could this be the battle the Parthenon depicts?
While we're in the West, let's talk about the state of affairs in the later years. In the East, powers grew and flourished, while in the western parts of Europe, they remained weak. Why was this? I'll get back to that later.
I think I've raised enough questions for now and proven how there's a lot of interrelation between them. I'll get back to that and give my answers to these questions later.
Now let's move on to another great mystery. This one is a bit closer to home for us Americans; it engulfs some of the greatest mysteries, including the disappearance of trade ships, cargo planes, and the great mystery of Torpedo Flight 19. I speak, of course, of the enigmatic Bermuda Triangle, the mysterious region around the Bahamas that seems to claim ships and planes without leaving any trace. Dozens of ships and planes have been lost in this region, many without a trace. Radios and compasses are said to malfunction in this region; storms are unpredictable and sudden; strange lights are reported on the horizon.
What is the secret of the Bermuda Triangle? Its mystery has confounded men for decades. Some believe aliens reside in the region, abducting ships and their crews at random. Others believe in other mystical powers that pull ships to the bottom of the ocean. Some people dismiss it as a hoax, simply believing that nothing is out of the ordinary about this particular region.
I don't have time in this paper to go over every incident involving the Triangle. The most famous incidents are the cases of Torpedo Flight 19, the USS Cyclops, the Star Tiger and Star Ariel, and the Spray. These ships and planes were lost at sea without a trace, and their last radio transmissions indicated no problems or threats. No matter what your beliefs, something odd is going on in the seas off of Bermuda.
In recent times, Bermuda has risen again in popularity in part due to some amazing new finds. Pots and pans, as well as other small tools, have been discovered off the coast of Bimini, an island not far from Bermuda and well inside the Bermuda Triangle. A “prophesy” from a so-called “mystic” , Edgar Cayce, stated that in the early 21st Century, the Lost City of Atlantis would rise again at Bimini. Now for the even weirder part: In the early 2000s, an American diver found rows of stones off the coast of Bimini, visible now because of sinking sea levels that cause the ocean floor to rise. These stone rows run for hundreds of feet and are of exact make and design of ancient tide breakers that early civilizations built to protect ports from wild ocean currents! It would be almost impossible to form these perfect rows naturally, especially because the stones are not native to the region they now reside in. Plus, divers have found ancient metal anchors nearby, suggesting that this may have been a port of an ancient city. Not particularly interesting, unless you happen to know that the anchors are actually… Greek. Blows the mind, doesn't it?
Now let's move to a few legends. First we have an ancient Indian tale. By Indians, I mean people from India, not Native Americans. These people speak of a great city on an island far out to the sea, an island that was destroyed in a cataclysmic storm in a single night. This city was rumored to be great and powerful.
Off the coast of Africa lies another legend and mystery. An island nation was discovered - one with no knowledge of seafaring - that was not native to the island. When asked about their arrival, they simply point out to the Atlantic Ocean, saying that a great people from “out there” came on ships and brought them to this island. This was centuries BC.
