The Meaning of Colors

Colors have a powerful effect on our emotions, so perhaps we should be more in tune with those that we wear when we step outside in the morning.

Red

Red is historically a color which is symbolic of fire. Hundreds of years ago it would have been worn only by those with power and importance and today many still associate red in the same way.

Purple

Similarly purple has connotations of royalty and opulence, but is also often used during the seasons of Lent and Advent.

White

The traditional view of white is crystallized with the use of white on wedding days. It is seen to represent purity and virtue.

Black

Black used to be a symbol of authority and power. Up to the 17th Century it was difficult to make dyes hold their colour and it was very expensive to obtain dyes which would remain a true black and therefore it denoted prosperity by those who wore it.

Pink

Pink is the Christian color for the third Sunday in Advent, but is more traditionally seen representing new born baby girls and representing joy and happiness.

Blue

Blue has been seen as the color of servitude with many servant previously wearing the color and the Virgin Mary is also often illustrated wearing blue. Today it represents confidence, intelligence and stability.

Brown

Brown used to represent humility and poverty and indeed today many are not keen on the color brown for the inexpensive look it portrays.

Orange

Orange is the color of courage as well as coming to represent energy and warmth in more recent years.

Green and Yellow

Green and Yellow are intermingled with many similar meanings, including the renewal of life and nature and hope. Yellow is the Christian color of Easter Season (particularly when used with white.) These color can also represent the other end of the emotional spectrum of envy, greed and treachery - Judas Iscariot is often portrayed wearing yellow.

The brighter colors of the rainbow can help lift someone's mood, while every color is bound to have a different sentiment for most people.
