So we have all heard of the Beatles back masking in songs such as “Blue Jay Way”, and “ Revolution 9”. And if you haven't, search it on YouTube. Anyway the story is that on January 7, 1967 Paul McCartney's car crashed and the driver was extremely bloody and disfigured and the driver was reported dead. In 1969 a song called “Saint Paul” (written by Terry Knight) was aired and it spoke of Paul being in heaven. This could have referred to the upcoming break-up of the Beatles, but some fans began thinking that maybe Paul actually died in that car crash. Hence the rumor began to spread. The believers were called “clusters” because the searched for hours on end for clues back masked and hidden in the records.
Then what really kicked this rumor off was when a student from Eastern Michigan University (Tom Zarski) called a radio station hosted by DJ Russ Gibb, laid out the rumor, and prompted the DJ to play “Revolution 9” backwards. The DJ had to give in due to his curiosity, and sure enough he could here the words “turn me on dead man” repetitively, as well as “Satan look at me… please!” said in a satanic feminine voice. When played forward this is “If you become… Naked.” Then stories spread across the nation until photographers from LIFE magazine tracked down the singer to his country home and published photos. But to this day there are still clusters that stick to their beliefs.
