Ladies and gentlemen, some would have you believe that homosexuality is a choice. One day, all of us wake up and consciously decide whether or not we are straight, gay or bi. I don’t know about you, dear reader, but I didn’t wake up and say “I’m straight”. I just am. You could say I was born that way. Further more, they would have you believe that homosexuals have an agenda and that agenda is to turn everyone into them. But, I for one know you will not stand for these blatantly uneducated claims, I know you are smarter then that.
In fact, it all sounds a bit paranoid to me. Too much like science fiction. I can’t help but think of this line pulled from a popular cartoon, What are we going to do tonight, Brain? The same thing we do every night Pinky, try and take over the world! This is what some of the great science fiction thrillers are made of. I’m sure many of you remember the recent movie War of the Worlds in which aliens descended on earth with the intention of taking it over. Some of the most popular science fiction movies are based on the premise that something is taking over, be it evil in the case of Star Wars or aliens as in the case of War of the Worlds. And now, the true homosexual agenda has been revealed; they want to take over the world.
Ladies and gentlemen, what is wrong with this picture? Part of it is the fact that this argument was based on a very old document, The Bible. And while I searched, I could not find anywhere in the old or new testament where it alluded to gays taking over the world. I did however find the oft quoted book of Leviticus. For those of you who don’t know, this book is in the old testament and is the book most often quoted by people who oppose homosexuality and/or gay marriage.
To save you the trouble, I will quote some of this book here. From Chapter 20, Verse 13 we find; if a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. But Leviticus also dictates that a man should have no contact with a woman on her period (Lev 15:19-24), that slaves may be kept (Lev 25:44) and that eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev 11:10). I wonder if the same people that believe homosexuality is a choice (or as Dr. Laura Schlesinger put it, a mistake of nature) also keep slaves, do not eat shellfish and have no contact with women on their periods?
The thing is, you can’t have it both ways. You can’t believe that homosexuality is morally wrong based on something in the Old Testament and believe that the verses about women, slavery and what one can and cannot eat are outdated. Either the whole thing is, or none of it is.
Ladies and gentlemen, I urge you to draw your own conclusions based on your personal beliefs, and to stand up against the uneducated claims that would have you believe homosexuality is a choice. Who would choose ridicule? Who would chose the stigma? Who would chose to be unequal to another human being based on laws that have not been revised to reflect today’s society?
You do not have to accept the way someone lives to have tolerance for it. After all, you can only control your actions, not the actions of others.
