I am a lesbian and presently living in a monogamous relationship myself. My partner and I would like the same rights as heterosexual married couples. Yes this includes the right to claim each other for tax purpose whether it goes for or against us, the right to own a home together, the right to share insurance polices together, to right to make decision regarding each others health, and more important the right to share our lives together. My partner and I have acquired belongings together, yet if there was a break up between the two of us, who will say this is hers or that, is mine; We have no laws to protect us if this was to happen. Meaning if the house is in my name then she has no rights regardless that she has paid into the house for the time that the two of us were together
In 1996 a movie titled “If These Walls Could Talk” was based on a few scenarios regarding lesbian relationships and the one scenario that stands out foremost in my mind took place in the 60's. This particular segment is in reference to an older lesbian couple where one of them dies and the other is left with nothing. The nephew of the one that died unexpectedly came into the home and decided it would be best to sell it. The home that the woman left behind had worked hard to pay for and made memories in as well only this woman had no laws to protect her because she could not have her name on the dead thus leaving the other woman without her home. Is this fair? For those that choose to live in a homosexual relationship and to be happy, that being the meaning of gay; they have no rights as a couple.
Only the political figures and the religious fanatics of today seem more concerned about whether gays and lesbians can marry or how much it is against God. Religious fanatics believe that homosexuality is an abomination to God, one of the reasons for stating this is because it is claimed that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for the reason of homosexual activity yet in Ezekiel 16:48 - 50, God States clearly that he destroyed Sodom's sins because of their pride, their excess of food, while the poor and needy suffered, worshipped many idols; sexual activity is not once mentioned. Furthermore, no where in the scriptures does it state that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for homosexual acts. In Luke 10:12, Jesus claims the sin was hospitality to strangers and this, would be in reference to rape not homosexuality. Leviticus 18:22 states, “Thou shall not lie with mankind as with womankind; it is an abomination.”
The word abomination is a religious term used against idolatry not a moral evil. Look at the scriptures surrounding this and how it speaks of incest, bestiality, adultery and sex with a woman during her menstrual cycle but not once is homosexuality mentioned in these scriptures. In the Bible woman were considered nothing and treated in that way, as well. So if a man was penetrated in a sexual manner as a woman would be that made him nothing because he was being treated as a woman. Some can say that this interpretation of these scriptures incorrect, who is to say, they are not. Do not we all interpret the scripture in a way to favor ourselves? Think about it, scriptures also discuss harming the temple of God. How many of people have their ears pierced or have a tattoo? Do several smoke cigarettes?
For that matter, the sun's rays are harmful to our bodies, but do we never go outside. So does this mean every individual who has a piercing or tattoo is a sinner? What about all the individuals who enjoy spending their days outside in the sun? Would this mean that we are all sinners and all are going to be doomed to hell for eternity? Some may say this is a bit extreme but is it? Does God classify sins in different degrees? Sin is sin, is this not correct? Matthew 7:1 “Do not judge, or you to will be judged,” This scripture seems to be clear but look at the scriptures after this passage, as well. The following scriptures go on to state that we will be judged in the same manner that we judge others. Would we not prefer for God to be our judge and not society?
In 2004, President George W. Bush endorsed an amendment banning same-sex marriages. So now we are changing the whole constitution and allowing a form of discrimination to be written into it. Let's see this how the United Stated Constitution begins; “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” Notice the beginning stated, “We the People of the United States,” which would mean all is including homosexuals. Only our dear President would like to write discrimination into the constitution. Homosexuals are expected to pay taxes and all the other things that an American citizen is supposed to do, yet they can not marry.
